A ballet, a comicbook movie, an action thriller, a documentary, a biopic and a still-gestating Broadway musical -- Danny Elfman has spent the last year dashing madly from one project to another and turned out vastly different music for each of them.
Elfman has reunited with director Gus Van Sant for Milk, the story of California's first openly gay elected official. But earlier this year, he teamed with filmmaker Errol Morris on S.O.P. [Standard Operating Procedure], his first documentary score, and created the intense music for Wanted and the wild, over-the-top score for Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
"This was one of my most intensely busy years, and probably the most creative that I've had in a long time, because of the juxtaposition of everything," says Elfman, who is soon to start the score for Joe Johnston's remake of The Wolf Man."The greater the contrast, the happier I am."
The Wolf Man provides a contrast to his earlier experience working for Tim Burton on the remake of Planet of the Apes.
"The lucky thing for me is that the original 'Wolf Man' did not have an extremely famous musical score. (So) at least I'm not going to have a mountain of people madly in love with the original," the Grammy winner and three-time Oscar nominee says, laughing. "There's a little bit of relief."
