BRIEF REVIEW

With a movie whose music credits swipe from a variety of film and pop classic sources as well as boasting two ("additional") composer credits, one might expect a joyous romp of a comedy with nods and winks towards various styles. What have, however, is a film which lies flat on the highway, the victim first of a brutal stabbing in the back by a jokeless script, a vicious kicking from lifeless direction, and finally allows itself to be repeatedly hammered as a road kill victim of temp track driving. A score with no coherence, used in a film which simply fails make it into a virtue. For what it is worth, Chris Beck's contribution (a week's worth, summing up to about 10 cues) is funky when it gets going, but is for the most part limited to scene changes, an art which fortunately noone entrusted to a temp track (rather like using a truck to collect the paper from the corner shop - cheaper and quicker on foot, and there's no problem with parking).

Webmaster's additional: Composer's memories

Chris Beck admits his role was limited to filling in gaps in a short space of time. He remembers having scored the first 5-6 minutes of the film, some bad guy/redneck underscore, and the underwater rescue finale (NB. obviously not the pirate ship background music, which is Powell/Gregson-Williams's strangely fitting Chicken Run music), plus perhaps some "utltra-simple pad-type cues that just kinda sit there".
