THE FILM

The Marc Pease Experience is a film whose titular character (played by Jason Schwartzman) is, eight years on, still living off the false hopes instilled in him by his mentor, high school drama director Mr Gribble (Ben Stiller) on the night of his calamatous role in a production of The Wiz. Any description of this film as a comedy is sadly untrue, despite any expectation from the set-up that there might be dark humour or even some gently uplifting coming-of-age fun. From the start, it is borderline creepy how older actors are sold as highschool children and the only central character who can pull it off is expected to be in an affair with both leads. Slow, poorly paced, unfunny, and it is difficult to relate to a group of characters so self-absorbed. According to various websites this film took 2 years to make it to a half-hearted release, including re-shoots.

THE MUSIC

Nearly all the music is stage-bound, and many scenes that might have been saved by some of Beck's more tinkly magic (the kind found in his teen rom coms) are left unscored. There is a single cue, reprised in the end credits that hints at a jauntily paced laidback groove, but even here the effect is pedestrian. It is doubtful there is much else in the film that comes from Chris Beck, and as a result it is unsurprising there is no soundtrack release available.
